Treatment of Scars (Children)

At Hair Restoration Blackrock, our team has extensive expertise in treating children with scars caused by accidents, injuries or surgeries.

Hair transplantation can be highly effective in camouflaging scarred areas on the scalp for these patients. We have successfully treated individuals with congenital conditions resulting in hair loss, surgical scars or scarring caused by accidents or burns sustained during childhood.

For these patients, hair is typically harvested from healthy areas of the scalp, known as the donor area, and transplanted into the scarred regions. In cases where scarring affects the donor area itself, the procedure can be more challenging. However, hair transplantation often remains a viable option, and working with a wig maker can sometimes enhance outcomes for these young patients.

Our doctors are experienced in caring for younger patients and recognise the additional care and attention they may need. Hair transplantation is often the least invasive option, with all procedures performed under local anaesthesia. In comparison, alternative treatments like multiple tissue expansion surgeries often require general anaesthesia.

Many families consult with us to explore options for their child. In some cases, surgery may be postponed until the child themselves expresses concern about their hair loss, which typically occurs in the pre-teen or teenage years.

It is important to consider potential future hair loss in these patients. A family history of hair loss can provide valuable insights into long-term planning.

If your child has experienced hair loss due to scarring, please contact our clinic to arrange a consultation and explore treatment options.
