Event Recap: Hair Disorders – Emerging Evidence and Therapeutics at HRBR

Recently, we had the privilege of hosting an exceptional gathering at Hair Restoration Blackrock (HRBR) for an evening dedicated to discussing Hair Disorders: Emerging Evidence and Therapeutics. Leading Dermatologists from across Ireland joined us to explore the latest advancements in hair loss treatments, making it a night filled with deep insights and exciting future prospects for the field.

A Stellar Line-up of Speakers

The event featured a series of talks by some of the leading experts in hair research and restoration, each of whom brought a unique perspective to the conversation.

Professor Jerry Shapiro

Professor Jerry Shapiro is a globally renowned Dermatologist specialising in hair disorders and hair transplant surgery. Based in New York, he is celebrated for his extensive research and clinical expertise in conditions such as alopecia areata (AA), androgenetic alopecia (AGA) and cicatricial alopecia. His work has significantly shaped current understanding and treatments of hair disorders and his talk focused on the latest therapeutic options and emerging treatments for cicatricial (scarring) alopecia, including frontal fibrosing alopecia (FFA), lichen planopilaris (LPP), folliculitis decalvans (FDC) and central centrifugal cicatricial alopecia (CCCA).

Professor Desmond Tobin

Professor Desmond Tobin, an expert in hair follicle biology, is a figure of international repute. Much of his research focuses on hair health and pigmentation and he has a particular interest in alopecia areata (AA). Currently serving as the Director of the Charles Institute of Dermatology at University College Dublin, Prof. Tobin provided the audience with insight into current alopecia areata research in Ireland and the ongoing search for its cause. This includes research that patients of HRBR have kindly contributed to with both information and blood sample donations.

Dr. Dmitri Wall

HRBR’s own Dr. Dmitri Wall is a Consultant Dermatologist and Deputy Medical Director at HRBR as well as Clinical Associate Professor at The Charles Institute in UCD and an honorary consultant in the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital. Dr Wall specialises in the treatment of scalp and hair disorders as well as hair transplant surgery. He also has a special interest in health informatics.

Known for his patient-centred approach and clinical excellence, Dr. Wall provided an update on the future of alopecia areata treatment for the Irish Dermatologist at a time when clinical trials and research have resulted in the first licenced treatments for AA patients. Dr Wall discussed how these treatments can be utilised to improve outcomes for patients. He also focused on how safety and effectiveness of therapy is being captured by the international patient registry he is a co-lead of: GRASS (Global Registry of Alopecia Areata disease Severity and treatment Safety). This initiative between National and International Skin Registry solutions (https://nisrsolutions.com), an Irish-based charity and the Australasian Hair and Wool Research Society has recruited over 1,000 patients across 3 countries and is in the process of expanding to more sites in Ireland and countries internationally.
